In the course of the advancing energy transition and the associated shutdown of conventional power plants, the instantaneous reserve in the grid is decreasing due to the loss of the kinetic energy stored in the power plant generators during operation. In order to maintain the level of security of supply currently available in this respect, the missing rotating masses must be replaced by high-power batteries with a relatively low energy content, connected via three-phase converters with four-quadrant operating mode. The present EFZN volume reports on the conditions under which this is possible, whereby the flywheel behaviour can be emulated virtually (Virtual Synchronous Machine – VISMA).
