To meet the challenges of a future-proof healthcare provision, the fostering of interprofessional competence among those working in the many health professions has by now become obligatory. However, how this domain of competence manifests itself at the level of practical action as the desired outcome and tangible success of educational processes is frequently associated with a vague idea rather than with a convincing target vision.
The present work deepens the understanding of interprofessional competence by examining existing reference frameworks and transferring the reconstructed data into a new, application-oriented model. This grounded model of interprofessional action encompasses four central dimensions of action associated with collaboration: initiating for the team, harmonising within the team, synchronising with the team, and reflecting with a view to the team. On the one hand, these action schemata show that aspects at the content level as well as at the relationship level equally constitute the arc of successful interprofessional collaboration. On the other hand, it becomes clear that each action pattern is accompanied by different preconditions.
Owing to qualities such as professional equanimity, solution agility and skill in making use of conflict, the potentials of the various professions are successfully harnessed in teams of varying composition. On the path towards individually defined bio-psycho-social health, interprofessional competence thus leads to tangible benefits for patients and clients. This research and the resulting model provide basic knowledge and options for action for those who design educational programmes, enabling them to reflect on the fostering of competence and to implement competence development with a more transparent conception.
