The Braunschweigische Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft (BWG) is a learned society rich in tradition, in which the interaction of the natural sciences, engineering sciences and the humanities is cultivated in particular. The BWG Yearbook 2023 provides an overview of the society’s activities, its research projects and public as well as BWG-internal lectures and treatises by members and invited scholars. Outstanding events in 2023 were the 80th anniversary of the BWG with the colloquium “Das Selbstverständnis der BWG zwischen Kontinuität und Wandel im Verlauf ihrer 80-jährigen Geschichte” and the ceremonial event “80 Jahre BWG – Aufgaben von Universitäten und Gelehrtengesellschaften – Aktuelle Standortbestimmung: Chancen, Herausforderungen, Erwartungen”, the award of the Gauß Medal to Professor Dr Maryna Viazovska and the bioethics symposium on “Umwelt und Gesundheit”. Further milestones were the activities of the BWG commission SYnENZ “Synergie und Intelligenz” with the 2nd symposium “Beurteilen, Messen, Bewerten” and the topic “Zusammenwirken von natürlicher und künstlicher Intelligenz”. Numerous members from the ranks of the Junge BWG were appointed to academic institutions. The spectrum of the event series “Akademievorlesungen” and “Energiewende” and of the scholarly contributions demonstrates the diversity of current scientific research in an interdisciplinary context.
