Infectious keratitis is a common ocular disease in horses and can lead to loss of vision. Therapy is based predominantly on topical antibiotic treatment, whose efficacy is increasingly limited, mainly by the development of resistance. This study therefore investigates antiseptics as a complementary or alternative therapeutic option.
In this in vitro study, the bactericidal efficacy of povidone-iodine, hypochlorous acid and polyhexanide against typical bacterial pathogens of equine infectious keratitis was examined. To this end, the minimal bactericidal concentrations (MBC) of the antiseptics against common clinical isolates of various bacterial species were determined by standardised microdilution.
All three antiseptics showed good bactericidal in vitro efficacy. MBC values ranged from 0.8 to 6.4 ppm for polyhexanide, from 0.4 to 6.4 ppm for hypochlorous acid and from 4 to 32 ppm for povidone-iodine. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolates did not show higher MBC values than methicillin-sensitive strains.
The results provide a sound basis for the further evaluation of antiseptic substances in the context of equine infectious keratitis. The study highlights the potential of antiseptic therapeutic approaches as a complementary component of future treatment concepts.
