The transformation of the electrical energy system poses new requirements for grid stability, as conventional large-scale power plants are increasingly being replaced by converter-coupled renewable generation units. This work investigates the use of the virtual synchronous machine (VISMA) as a key technology for providing grid-stabilising ancillary services in decentralised power grids.
The focus lies on the development of a modular, universally applicable control concept for the stable operation of microgrids. Both grid-parallel and island grid operation are addressed, as well as the uninterrupted transition between the two operating modes. In addition, methods are developed for the synchronisation of island grids, for black start, and for the analysis and management of grid stability phenomena such as active and reactive power oscillations.
The proposed control structures are characterised by a decentralised, low-communication design and ensure safe grid operation even in the event of communication failures. The concepts are not only investigated by means of simulation but are also experimentally validated in a realistic, fully converter-based low-voltage grid with several VISMA systems. The results demonstrate that the developed control system enables stable and flexible operation of microgrids and makes an important contribution to the integration of renewable energies into future electrical energy systems.
