The emotional unity of Europe rests above all on the achievements of European philosophy, music, literature and painting. The effects of painting and music on the emergence of larger spaces of thought, communication, form and identity are to be presented here. The significance of European painting and music has recently receded somewhat into the background as a result of worldwide processes of economisation, digitalisation and globalisation.

The future of Europe and of world society will depend, among other things, on the extent to which it proves possible—with the help of classical and contemporary painting and music in particular—to allow an emotional unity to emerge beyond national borders. Design too is of importance here. In the twenty-first century, in the context of globalisation processes, unity, respect and tolerance will increasingly be at issue.

Classical music will also play a significant role in the emergence of a world society. Works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart or Frédéric Chopin already connect all people with one another today and fulfil the deep longing of all humanity for freedom, meaning, reason and unity. Their works do not relate to Europe alone but are regarded worldwide as sites of intellectual freedom and unity.

The aim of the text is to grant an insight into the foundations of painting and music, especially to those outside the field, such as marketing experts, software engineers, economists and natural scientists, and to introduce them to current questions. This text also seeks to offer stimulus and inspiration to artists, musicians, politicians and sociologists. It is about pooling forces, increasing interdisciplinarity and thereby the possibility of intellectual exchange, innovative stimulus and a change of perspective. “High tech” and “high culture” belong together and form a unity (Florida 2004). Without “high culture” there is no “high tech”.
