Dirk von Suchodoletz, Diplom-Mathematiker, born in 1972, first worked with computers in 1985. The ZX Spectrum was followed by the Amiga 500 and, in the early 1990s, his entry into the PC world. He came to the long-term archiving of digital objects via the emulation of old computer games. Earlier classics could no longer be brought back to life on today’s platforms in any trivial way. This naturally also applies to a whole range of other documents or scientific data. As an assistant at the Chair of Communication Systems in Computer Science at the University of Freiburg, he began his doctorate on the subject of digital long-term archiving in 2004 and completed it in 2008. During this time he was a member of the Nestor Media working group and involved in the EU-funded PLANETS Project. He presented the results of his work at various conferences.
On 15 January 2010, the awards commission of the Verein zur Förderung der Informationswissenschaft (VFI) decided to grant this year’s second prize to Dr Dirk von Suchodoletz for the following work: Funktionale Langzeitarchivierung digitaler Objekte. Erfolgsbedingungen des Einsatzes von Emulationsstrategien. The commission briefly justifies this as follows: Mr von Suchodoletz’s dissertation constitutes a particularly thorough and comprehensive analysis of a strategy for digital long-term archiving.
