The mother’s glucocorticoid balance during pregnancy plays an essential role in the timely growth development of the fetus. Alterations lead, among other things, to the development of intrauterine growth restriction, IUGR. The enzyme system of the two 11 hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases, in particular the enzyme 11 HSD2, and the regulatory circuit of placental corticotropin are important placental systems intended to prevent a pathological alteration of the glucocorticoid balance and its effects on the growth behaviour of the fetus.

In this study, a total of 88 placentas of children with altered growth (IUGR, SGA and preeclampsia) and of normally developed children were examined for altered expression of CRH and 11ßHSD2. The results show clear differences in expression between growth-retarded and normally sized newborns.

By way of the theories of Lamarck, Dubos, Dörner and Barker, connections can be established between this phenomenon and the later development of a metabolic syndrome in children born with IUGR.
