An accident resulting in serious injuries constitutes an exceptional situation in a person’s life. Acute treatment is followed by inpatient rehabilitation lasting many weeks or months in a trauma rehabilitation centre. This stay is a situation associated with fears, pain, uncertainty and helplessness, in which communication between practitioners and patients plays a central role.

How do the staff of the rehabilitation centre experience communication with patients with a migration background? How does this communication proceed from a linguistic point of view? Are there language barriers? What do these mean and how do staff deal with them? Which other aspects influence intercultural communication? What effects do cultural aspects such as religious customs, eating habits, family ties, or the perception and expression of pain, as well as differing understandings of illness and health and differing ways of dealing with disability, have? How do staff deal with these?

The present study investigates these and other questions and offers valuable insights and suggestions to interested staff in the health sector (and not only to them).
