This study examines nursing education in 15 European countries. It primarily presents empirical findings obtained in the author’s own investigation. The nursing education of European countries is analysed, with particular emphasis on changes in training as well as on curriculum elements and their interdependence. The comparison draws on the results of the survey (expert interviews and questionnaires) and of the document analysis (covering all sub-processes of curriculum development), and works out a basic pattern from which trends in nursing education can be derived.
A working model (a first approach to a curricular conception) is presented, intended to illustrate how future developments can be shaped with a view to a European integration of nursing education. Using the example of the module “First Aid”/“Emergency Medicine”, the competence-oriented approach of a curriculum is also presented, along with a conceptual approach to blended learning, in order to contribute by way of example to a clearer consideration of learning organisation within the curriculum.
Finally, summarising and forward-looking reflections are presented. In addition, models and theories of nursing that have played a role in the curricular development of the training documents examined are presented and explained. Didactic approaches that could be of interest for a European curriculum development are reviewed, and procedures and analytical systems are introduced.
