This work presents a situation-adaptive, user-centred driver model based on the consistent networking of driver assistance systems, which sustainably improves Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) in lane change situations. In extensive driving tests on public roads, significant changes in the driving behaviour of the test subjects with and without ACC were identified on the basis of subjective and objective characteristics. Building on these findings, a holistic, consistent driver model for lane change manoeuvres was developed using methods of fuzzy logic, which represents human driving behaviour with fuzzy perception and decision-making processes. In further driving tests, this driver model was validated and its effectiveness demonstrated by improved system acceptance and more natural driving behaviour with ACC.
