Abstract

“Fitness Follows Function?” is a subject-integrative teaching concept developed within the framework of a dissertation examining the synergetic didactic potentials of the disciplines of home economics and textiles. In this respect, the dissertation provides insights into the synergy-relevant thematic areas of the two disciplines and outlines the teaching concept ‘Triple F’ (‘Fitness Follows Function?’), presenting it together with aspects of its disciplinary academic basis and its empirical evaluation. The teaching concept is anchored in constructivism following Mandl, and the methodological approach is project-based.

In investigating an expanding market — here, by way of example, the fitness market — the students develop a generalisable strategy for finding their way in a new market. For easier handling, the investigation of the fitness market is narrowed down to an engagement with functional products bearing the attribute of fitness. In the course of planning a sports event, the students thereby explore the academic subject areas of functional food and functional textiles. During the concluding realisation of the event, the learned content is applied directly. The effectiveness of the teaching concept is examined by comparing the disciplinary knowledge of the project group with that of a control group. The study belongs to the field of empirical school and classroom research, and its findings contain indications for the further development of subject-integrative and project-based teaching concepts.
