The small group velocity of light in periodical structures can be used to dramatically decrease the size of phase shift, time delay, and dispersion compensation components. In this thesis the photonic crystal line-defect waveguides are investigated. Four major issues of slow light are considered: small group velocity, large second order dispersion, coupling to small group velocity modes, and disorder induced losses. Following concepts are presented: constant group velocity 0.02c on the bandwidth of 1THz, dispersion of -200ps/nm/mm on the bandwidth of 100GHz, two stage coupling with 95% transmission at 0.02c group velocity.
