Fluorescent lamps have been used to generate artificial light for more than 60 years and today cover up to 70 percent of global demand for artificial light. Compact and fluorescent lamps must be operated with ballasts, since the process of gas discharge requires a stabilised lamp current.
In this work, a novel digital electronic ballast for operating fluorescent lamps was developed. Owing to the substantial simplification afforded by digital signal processing, it is possible to implement, in addition to the basic ballast functions, new supplementary functions that do not yet exist in this form on today’s ballast market. These include, for example, lamp type detection or luminous flux control through the use of digital signal processing. The optimal coordination between software and hardware enables the high integration of digital functions into a single microcontroller.
The digital electronic ballast was adapted to modern T5 lamps, which, owing to their high luminous efficacies at relatively low powers, are nowadays preferred in lighting technology.
