Today, many pedestrians suffer serious injuries in road traffic. Their safety can be improved by active pedestrian protection systems. These systems monitor the vehicle’s surroundings using sensor technology and intervene in the driving process in critical situations. At present, accidents can thus be avoided at low speeds. Since the risk of serious injury increases with rising collision speed, the goal is to be able to avoid accidents at higher speeds as well. To this end, an imminent collision with a pedestrian must be detected earlier. This work therefore investigates the situational behaviour of pedestrians and uses this knowledge within the vehicle system. It can be shown that this approach, together with the situationally adapted action concept in the pedestrian protection system, demonstrably allows further accidents to be avoided entirely.
