In this dissertation, methods of experimental economics are used to examine how cultural factors influence employee motivation and whether an incentive system has a different effect in China and Germany. The author first contrasts Chinese and German culture and, drawing on the best-known cultural studies, identifies the typical behavioural patterns found in business practice. Whereas the data of cross-cultural studies are usually collected through surveys and interviews, the author applies the quantitative method of experimental economics to test these findings. The advantages lie in the fact that the framework conditions of an experiment are controllable, so that a particular factor can be investigated in a targeted manner across several countries. Approximately 500 students from China and Germany took part in the experiments conducted for this research project. The first series of experiments examined material and non-material incentives. While hardly any differences between China and Germany emerged with regard to material incentives, significant differences in effect can be demonstrated for non-material incentives. The second series of experiments tested the participants’ reaction to a situation of unequal pay. Contrary to expectations, the German participants were not demotivated by being informed of unequal pay for the same work.
