Although many buildings stand empty in the villages of western and eastern Germany, there have so far been only few studies of this problem, which calls into question the very substance of the villages and of their historically grown village centres. The 15th Bleiwäscher Dorfsymposium, held from 14 to 16 May 2006, therefore devoted itself to this neglected topic.

The contributions by scholars and practitioners compiled in this volume provide an overview of the extent of rural vacancy and its causes, discuss possible strategies for action, and present successful political and planning approaches as well as examples of successful conversions from various federal states, regions and villages.
