The Polish physician, writer and educator Janusz Korczak has become known worldwide above all on account of his impressive life story, which led him, together with the orphaned children entrusted to his care, into the horrors of the Warsaw Ghetto and to his death at Treblinka. In educational science, his unconditional commitment to children’s rights has attracted considerable attention. The political elements of his extensive work, however, have to date been analysed only in a rudimentary fashion. Through an examination of Korczak’s conception of the human being, his critique of society and his pedagogical and political principles, the present study reveals how fundamental and significant the political was and remains for Korczak’s life, work and message. His approach to education is preceded by a political thinking that not only shapes education itself but also, as in the case of granting children rights and training their democratic and political capabilities, pursues genuinely political aims. Korczak was thus not only a physician, writer and educator, but also a political thinker.
