The motif of “Israel” appears in the lyrical texts of the Yiddish-language writer Malka Li (1904–1976) as identity-forming and connecting as well as subjective. The cultural continuities of Judaism and the concretely tangible ruptures in her biography, shaped by the Eastern European shtetl, form the basis of this interdisciplinary study. The question of (Jewish) identity corresponds here to a foil that emerges in the field of tension between religious traditions, the imaginary Israel and the politically existing State of Israel.
