Sustainability is an established component of scholarly and political debate. At the latest since the World Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, sustainability—internationally referred to as sustainability—has been declared a binding objective of the international community and has been widely accepted. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), comprising ten member states, has likewise set itself comprehensive sustainability goals aimed at meeting present-day needs while at the same time preserving natural resources. A look at actual practice, however, reveals the discrepancy between political will and everyday reality within this community of states: although ASEAN has produced a large number of remarkable political initiatives, the region faces considerable ecological challenges in the course of its rapid economic growth. Despite this, there is as yet hardly any work addressing this area of tension. Where do ASEAN’s member states stand in achieving these goals? What needs to be done to close the gap between aspiration and reality? To date, these questions have been examined comprehensively neither theoretically nor empirically.
This is the starting point of the present study. Its central task is the theoretical and empirical analysis of sustainable corporate management in ASEAN, using the examples of Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Particular attention is devoted to the acceptance and implementation behaviour of companies and their executives.
