Waste management in BiH is currently not sufficiently organised and does not meet the standards of a properly regulated waste management system. Collection of household waste with a high degree of area coverage exists only in urban areas. Rural areas are only partly covered by a regulated waste collection service. In both urban and rural areas, waste disposal is inadequate and constitutes a hazard to health and the environment. To date there are only two landfills in all of Bosnia that can be classified as “controlled”. At the same time, particularly in rural areas, the predominant volume of waste is deposited on illegal dumps. GWCC is involved in 3 pilot projects financed by the World Bank in order to provide assistance in the introduction of properly regulated waste management structures. These projects highlight the specific requirements for introducing properly regulated waste management structures even in countries with a low per capita income.
