The development and identification of new enantioselective catalysts play a central role in organic chemistry.

The graphic on the title page outlines the idea underlying this dissertation: conventional methods usually identify new enantioselective catalysts by means of a test reaction followed by work-up and analysis of the products. Alternatively, and in a less distorted manner, the selectivity of a catalyst should also be determinable immediately after the start of the reaction by quantifying the intermediates formed.

To demonstrate this methodology, the kinetic resolution in allylic substitution was chosen. It could be shown that a soft mass spectrometric detection of the positively charged intermediates indeed enables a rapid and reliable assessment of enantioselective catalysts.

The method could be extended to mixtures of different enantioselective catalysts and ultimately even led to the discovery of further, hitherto unknown bimetallic intermediates.
