The aim of this study is to develop a satellite-based inventory system in order to record and represent changes in forest cover across the entire Muara Kendawangan Nature Reserve and to carry out spatial analyses of the relationship between the population situation and land-cover change. At least two important aspects are of particular significance for the sustainable protection of the Kendawangan Nature Reserve: 1. Targeted management of the reserve in order to slow the degradation that has occurred so far and to avoid disturbances, in particular with regard to land management, socio-economic and silvicultural aspects as well as land degradation, loss of biological diversity, natural disasters, logging operations and land-use change through urbanisation inside and outside the area. This study is an example of how integrated and multidisciplinary monitoring of the area can be carried out. It considers the area from various perspectives and incorporates diverse aspects that are inherently interdependent into the investigation. 2. A policy and a strategy for steering anthropogenic influence are important in view of population growth and urbanisation in the surroundings of the area.
