Lime deposits or so-called scale deposits in drainage systems often result in long-term and
cost-intensive maintenance for the operating authorities of tunnelling construction. Besides
the development of optimized and thereby deposit depleted basic concepts of drainage sys-
tems, it is tried to come up with different technological approaches against this problem, es-
pecially the use of hardness stabilisation.
Within this paper the ability to apply hardness stabilisation within tunnel drainage system is
researched by theoretical considerations and in situ experiments at an existing building. An
optimized verification method is developed which is better adjusted to the boundary condi-
tions of tunnel drainage systems than hitherto used methods. Therefore it delivers more pre-
cise and more reliable results. This method is transferred into a general trial concept which
enables the user to come up with reliable and system-specific results, concerning functional-
ity and effectiveness of hardness stabilisation used in any tunnel drainage system.
