The aim of the present work was to identify new approaches by means of which models of chemical bonding in intermetallic compounds can be developed. These models should be based on both experimental and quantum-chemical findings and should be physically meaningful. Furthermore, the models should serve to represent the chemical bonding in the compounds in a clear and correct manner, thus enabling new concepts for the formation and structure prediction of intermetallic compounds.
The objects of investigation were intermetallic AB2 compounds with the structure of the CuAl2 type. From among the many representatives, three classes of substances comprising a total of six compounds were selected, namely CuAl2, the stannides (MnSn2, FeSn2 and CoSn2) as well as the antimonides (TiSb2 and VSb2).
