The yam bean (Pachyrhizus erosus (L.)) grows in almost the entire Indonesian archipelago. The species is traditionally known as a vegetable root crop in the local markets of Indonesia, but recently the yam bean has also been regarded as an interesting crop species for commercial and industrial use; thus a close relative of P. erosus – the so-called “Chuin” type of P. tuberosus from the Amazon region of Peru – is used and processed like cassava. To date there is little information on the genetic diversity of the yam bean in Indonesia. This neglected crop species could be made more attractive for Indonesian agriculture through the collection of accessions, the documentation of cultivation and processing techniques, and the investigation of genetic diversity. Estimating the genetic differentiation of the yam bean on the basis of morpho-agronomic and molecular markers should provide useful information for a better use of this genetic resource. To this end, field studies and genetic diversity analyses of yam bean landraces from Indonesia were carried out.
