This study is an empirical investigation of learning conceptions and learning styles of Brazilian student teachers. Methodologically, it draws on the learning style inventories developed by SCHMECK, PASK and KOLB for describing individual learning styles of pupils and students, as well as on the theories of learning conceptions employed by SÄLJÖ and MARTON. With the aim of examining more closely the students’ differing cognitive learning styles, particular attention was given to Kolb’s model of the learning style inventory. In analysing the collected data, the study focused in particular on the question of whether there are significant differences between the learning styles of students who attend the relevant university training courses with and without prior pedagogical teaching experience. A further focus of the study was the question of whether and in what form the student teachers’ respective learning conceptions are reflected in their teaching conceptions and practices. The present investigation belongs to hypothesis-generating research. To that extent, its results do not permit definitive conclusions. They do, however, make clear that, on the one hand, reflection on the characteristics of one’s own learning behaviour is of fundamental importance for the further development of metacognitive processes and that, on the other hand, this can also lead to a greater sensitisation of teachers with regard to accepting individual differences in pupils’ learning behaviour in the classroom.
