This study develops a universally applicable, driver-centred model for integral vehicle safety. The model components – driver, vehicle, environment and driving task – are systematically classified, and the interactions describing the flow of information between the model components are analysed. Finally, the construct of context-adaptive driving task allocation is derived.

The model is applied in a case study on car-to-car and car-to-infrastructure communication.

Furthermore, the model is empirically validated in a driving simulator study. The study examines the hypotheses formulated on context-adaptive driving task allocation as well as the driving safety impact and user acceptance of the functions developed with the aid of the model.

Finally, a guideline for applying the model is derived.
