The trend in vehicle safety is moving towards an integral approach. This strategy involves a comprehensive consideration of vehicle-side protective measures throughout the entire course of an accident. The assessment method PreEffect-iFGS was developed to calculate the field effectiveness of integral safety measures for pedestrian protection. PreEffect-iFGS quantifies the performance of integral system strategies for pedestrian protection in real-world accidents, expressed by the reduction in the number of injured pedestrians. The development focused on integrating the method into the function development process, so that an assessment can be carried out from the first system ideas through to tested functional concepts, and consequently integral systems can be designed according to their field effectiveness.
