The discussion of clinical guidelines in the health care system is controversial. Guidelines represent corridors within which clinical medicine is to be practised. They must under no circumstances be understood as rigid instructions for action and have to be adapted to the individual patient and his or her living circumstances.

In contrast to external guidelines, internal guidelines in the hospital help to organise workflows transparently. They benefit the training of all occupational groups and support the flow of information to office-based physicians. The prerequisite is that they are regularly adapted to the current state of medical knowledge.

The staff of the Department of Urology and Paediatric Urology at Klinikum Weiden have therefore developed the present “in-house therapy” for the most frequent urological procedures and treatments, which is intended to provide a working corridor and a source of information also for medical occupational groups outside the field.
