“Nachhaltigkeit im Handel” (Sustainability in Retail), the publication by authors Klaus Kriener, Jörg H. Grimm and Christian Berg, takes up the current sustainability debate and reflects on it in the retail context. The study sets out to provide a holistic account of the specific requirements and challenges, possible strategic approaches and resulting implementations for sustainable action on the part of retail companies.

By way of introduction, a comprehensive overview of the key stakeholders of retail companies is given and the specific expectations of these stakeholders are discussed. In addition, the publication shows that, depending on the respective retail segment, different challenges have to be addressed in the sustainability context. Ways of successfully meeting these requirements and challenges are found in the choice of proactive sustainability strategies. The work transfers a scholarly typology of sustainability strategies to the retail sector and demonstrates it using selected retail companies. Finally, guidance for implementing the sustainability strategies presented is provided through an overview of corresponding software solutions and services offered by SAP.
