This work describes the preparation and characterization of new electrochromic polyiminoarylenes bearing carbazole and oligoaniline groups in the main and side chain, which are suitable for electronic devices such as displays. The polymers were prepared via a palladium-catalyzed Buchwald-Hartwig polycondensation and investigated by cyclic voltammetry and UV/Vis spectroscopy.
Through systematic variation of the comonomers, the electrochromic properties as well as the stability and solubility of the polymers were controlled. The polymers exhibit low oxidation potentials in the voltage range from 0 to 1.1 V and show quasi-reversible to reversible oxidation behavior, but no reversible reduction from 0 to -3 V. Polymers with carbazole in the main chain or side chain underwent an oxidation at ~ 0.71 V, which resulted in dimerization and thus additional stabilization of the polymer films. Upon oxidation, the polyiminoarylenes prepared display color changes from colorless transparent via orange or green to blue and dark blue. The polymer films show good adhesion to the ITO glass electrode, high color contrasts and short switching times in the range of 400 to 800 ms.
