The somatic development of newborns is influenced by a range of parameters. Among the most significant influencing factors, particularly in Western industrialised nations, are maternal body mass index (BMI) and smoking during pregnancy. The by no means rare combination of maternal underweight and smoking during pregnancy in particular can lead to considerable fetal growth retardation.

Assessing the state of somatic development at the time of birth, for example using the body measurements birth weight, birth length and head circumference, allows conclusions to be drawn about intrauterine growth and also a prediction of postnatal development. An assessment of newborns according to their state of somatic development, particularly according to birth weight and in relation to population percentiles calculated by gestational age, is therefore frequently applied in neonatological practice.

The state of somatic development of newborns is the subject of this book. Somatic development at the time of birth, described by various anthropometric measures, is analysed and the influence exerted on it by the parameters maternal BMI and smoking during pregnancy is examined. The evaluations presented here were carried out in detail and on the basis of an extensive body of data from the German Perinatal Survey. The results presented are therefore representative of Germany and allow a practice-oriented description of the individual and combined influences of maternal BMI and smoking during pregnancy on the state of somatic development of newborns.
