This dissertation presents novel methods for implementing a linear-quadratic optimal semi-active suspension controller in a real vehicle, methods which arise from the requirement of series-production suitability. For the implementation, a novel observer concept is presented that guarantees reliable state estimation even under realistic test conditions. The control method is selected on the basis of a methodical comparison. To ensure suitability for series production, the concept is examined with regard to parameter variations, a softly switching controller structure is proposed to account for tunability, and an approach for driving-state-dependent adaptation is presented. The experimental validation shows that ride comfort and driving safety can be further improved compared with skyhook control.
