Dropping out of health-enhancing physical activity is a fundamental problem in sport therapy and health-oriented sport. This research project therefore investigates the question of how people manage to commit themselves to physical activity in the long term. Many factors are known that can positively influence the decision to exercise regularly. Here the focus is on a determinant that has so far rarely been examined – enjoyment of sport. Enjoyment of sport, or “enjoyment”, is more than simply “having fun” or “feeling pleasure”. The construct comprises intrinsic, social and extrinsic factors, whereby it is precisely the intrinsic component, the enjoyment of the movement and activity itself, that appears to be particularly significant.
The aim of this work is a better understanding of enjoyment of sport and, on this basis, the identification of potentials for designing exercise offerings and programmes that generate a high level of enjoyment and thus adherence to physical activity.
