Owing to the negative impacts of fossil and nuclear energy resources, a viable and sustainable energy supply can only be achieved through the use of renewable energies. In Germany, the use of biomass for energy is of considerable importance. Although renewable energies generally enjoy a high level of public acceptance, the expansion of bioenergy at the local level can give rise to conflicts and resistance on the part of the resident population. However, there appear to be differences in acceptance with regard to the various bioenergy supply concepts (e.g. biogas plants, biofuel plants) and the feedstocks used for making bioenergy available (e.g. energy crops, straw). To date, no differentiated examination of the acceptance of the bioenergy utilisation concepts employed in Germany has been undertaken. Against this background, this study investigates, by means of an empirical survey, the public acceptance of possible bioenergy utilisation pathways in rural areas.

Furthermore, the growing number of bioenergy villages shows that bioenergy projects can be implemented in consensus with the population and that, moreover, citizens can be offered the opportunity to participate directly in such projects. A further aim of this work is therefore to discuss, on the basis of two interview studies, the essential prerequisites, success factors and possible impacts involved in the realisation of bioenergy villages.
