The optimal operation of complex heat supply systems with various supply components and temporally varying availabilities, with respect to the consumption and costs of energy resources, requires a qualified coordination of plant deployment. This book describes a methodology whose application makes it possible to achieve an optimal coordination of alternatively usable heat sources by means of a control-engineering function that automatically optimises plant operation. The dissertation presented by the author on the topic “Methodology for the engineering of open- and closed-loop controls in integrated building heating systems with various heat sources for the optimisation of energy consumption” presents, in a coherent form, an algorithm whose use allows a solution to this highly demanding optimisation task to be implemented as a control system.

The particular difficulty of optimising complex processes lies in the practicable determination of an algorithm that permits a numerically implementable formulation under engineering conditions. Through the purposeful decomposition of the optimisation task into a technological and a business-management part, it is easy to transfer the methodology to other tasks of the optimal coordination of complex technological plants.

With her work, the author makes an important and very useful contribution to closing a gap that is currently still discernible in the range of capabilities of modern control technology.

Since both model-based simulation is implied and the individual steps of the iterative optimisation process are visualised, the results of the numerical system work are transparent.

The book will provide helpful suggestions for many scientific as well as industry-related tasks of complex optimisation.
