With the turn towards the subjective experiences gathered in intercultural encounters, the methodological question arises of how these can be rendered accountable. On the one hand, the subjective dimension of intercultural encounters is often what those involved find most formative. On the other hand, subjective experiences cannot be generalised according to the criteria of evidence-based research: precisely what is subjective cannot be stated by third parties. The present edited volume offers proposals for resolving this challenge: from the perspectives of foreign language teaching methodology, cultural studies, media didactics, encounter research, development cooperation, intercultural pedagogy and phenomenology. The following topics are addressed: assessment of intercultural competence, the experience of cultural otherness, theories of alterity, FREPA descriptors, identity constructions, media staging, tandem experiences, virtual environment, organizational cultures, pedagogically reflexive interview, intercultural existence.
