Chassis development is in constant flux in order to meet increasing demands for comfort while simultaneously satisfying driving dynamics requirements. Combining actively controlled systems with passive axle concepts can widen the conflict of objectives described above.
The active wheel carrier newly developed in the context of this work is capable of influencing the toe and camber angle of the wheel individually per wheel, independently of the axle, and dynamically. The wheel can thus be optimally positioned relative to the road surface in every driving situation. This makes it possible to increase the lateral force potential of the tyre and to improve the dynamic handling behaviour of the vehicle.
