Description

The Josephson effect enables the creation of voltage standards with quantum accuracy by linking the electrical unit of voltage with the frequency. This work describes the implementation of Josephson junctions with NbxSi1‑x barriers into the fabrication of AC Josephson voltage standards. NbxSi1‑x barriers combine the robustness and high critical current densities of SNS junctions with the high characteristic voltage of SIS junctions. To gain insight into the inner workings of Josephson junctions with NbxSi1‑x barriers, their physical properties were studied. One of the main goals was the analysis of the dependence of the electrical junction parameters on the co-sputter conditions. The interpretation of the obtained data was done within a model of Josephson junctions with semiconducting barriers. Especially the very high capacitance of the junctions and the nearly non-hysteretic current-voltage characteristic set the studied junctions apart from both SIS and SNS junctions. The fabricated circuits with up to 69632 Josephson junctions prove that Josephson junctions with NbxSi1‑x barriers are well-suited for AC voltage standard applications.
