This work describes the development of human-machine systems for automated vehicle guidance on the basis of systems-ergonomic and anthropometric design criteria. The definition of a specific automation spectrum forms the basis of an operating and display concept for driver assistance systems at the vehicle guidance level. This generic concept serves to make the system complexity acting on the driver manageable. In addition to concrete operating concepts for the entire automation spectrum, a proposed solution is discussed for the challenge posed by high automation, namely keeping the driver available as supervisor and fallback level of the control loop despite the complete takeover of the driving task by automation. The prototypical concepts, integrated into a test vehicle, are examined in two experimental driving trials on a test track.
