Can collisions be aesthetic? Or is it possible for a clash to bring forth something beautiful? Which component of the word gains the upper hand in ‘art murder’?

The objects of investigation in this study are three crime novels, which are to be examined less with regard to the safe demarcation of their cruel fiction from the risk-free reality of their readership than with regard to the more or less visible dividing lines within their respective plots between aesthetic stability and ethical instability.

In Sabine Deitmer’s crime novel “Scharfe Stiche”, it is the ideal of beauty conveyed by plastic surgery that transforms the sensitive artistic enjoyment of a loving wife into the destructive urge to imitate of a vengeful patient.

In “Sterntaucher”, Astrid Paprotta describes how closely motherliness and music are linked to one another, so that they not only perish together but also allow the cruel concatenation of emotional coldness, torture and death to grow out of the remaining nothingness.

The title-giving “Röslein rot” by Ingrid Noll awakens, as a leitmotif, the investigative urge of the first-person narrator, which, together with her passion for still lifes and iconography, ultimately enables her to solve a murder case within her circle of friends.

Three criminally motivated perspectives open up three paths to ‘art murder’: murder through art, murder of art and murder around art.
