This work investigates the filtration of oil mist by coalescence filters. The starting point for the development of theoretical models was the construction of a reliable measurement system. Oil transport in the direction of flow can be described by the balance model as well as the coalescence model. To describe the relationship between the pressure drop across the filter and the transport processes, the channel-film model was formulated. This refutes the previously established interpretation that the oil saturation of the filter medium causes the pressure drop across it. More precisely, the arrow of causality is reversed. A differential pressure is required in order to transport oil through the filter. The channel-film model was evaluated and validated. Moreover, it offers the possibility of predicting the pressure drop across the filter.
