The development of molecule-based switches, sensors or storage media has long been a goal in order to obtain new materials via such a bottom-up approach. Against this background, the present work is devoted to tetranuclear transition metal complexes with cubane-like or grid-shaped structures. The grid complexes in particular are distinguished by their outstanding redox properties, while fascinating magnetic properties are observed for the cubane complexes. Pronounced solvatomagnetic effects, switchable spin ground states and the possible generation of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) make these compounds ideal building blocks for research into molecule-based information processing.
