This dissertation provides a systematic analytical description and modelling of an OABR Ethernet transmission link (100 Mbit/s) with respect to emissions and RF properties. One focus of the dissertation is the analytical description of mode conversion in Ethernet components. It is shown which parameter of an Ethernet component contributes to mode conversion and with which weighting factor. In addition to the analytical description, the work also demonstrates how key parameters such as mode conversion can be determined by measurement with high accuracy and reproducibility. A central focus of the dissertation is the modelling of Ethernet components and of the overall system. It is shown how the components (e.g. the common-mode choke or the connector) can be modelled. The emphasis here is on developing models that deliver high accuracy and reflect all RF parameters. In addition to the symmetrical parameters (such as differential-mode or common-mode transmission), the models also reproduce the asymmetrical parameters (mode conversion). Finally, a specific Ethernet transmission link is assembled from the individual component models and analysed by way of example. Design rules are derived from the insights gained through simulation. These provide information on how the mode conversion of the components can be reduced and thus the emissions of the overall Ethernet system minimised.
