The microscopy of fossil and recent microorganisms constitutes an important subfield of biology and palaeontology, whose establishment within the biological sciences went hand in hand with the development of the light and electron microscope. Micropalaeontology in particular, which has been steadily on the rise since the 1960s, has advanced to become an indispensable discipline for the study of fossils, since it makes it possible to reconstruct the climatic conditions of earlier geological eras or the exact geographical positions of the continents in the course of middle to more recent Earth history. In raw materials exploration, micropalaeontology contributes to the localisation of oil and natural gas deposits. The book provides an overview of the microscopic study of selected microorganisms, most of which hold the rank of index fossils in palaeontology. In addition to the essential preparation techniques underlying microscopy, it presents above all aspects of the mode of life of these organisms and their biostratigraphic significance. The book is intended equally as reading for specialists and amateur microscopists, which is why complex technical language is largely avoided.
