Low-loss waveguide transitions between planar circuits and waveguide structures are an important component of many high-frequency systems. They make it possible to select the most favourable type of waveguiding for the various functional subsystems. Conventional implementations of these transitions are often complex to manufacture and assemble and require comparatively much space for system integration. For systems with a large number of required interconnects, such as phased array antennas, this entails considerable effort and high costs. Therefore, this work presents new concepts for low-loss waveguide transitions that allow simple assembly and, owing to their compact dimensions, can be integrated very well into RF systems. Field-coupled structures are examined in greater depth; these enable tolerance-robust designs on the one hand and, on the other, can be integrated into filter designs as immittance inverters. The design steps required for integration into a waveguide filter as well as the measurement-based verification of the various proposed concepts are also addressed.
