People seek and need quality. It is both a guarantor and a driver of innovation of the first order. Processes, products and services are continuously improved and compared with one another in terms of quality. The question of quality has also reached the universities: research is ranked and teaching is evaluated.
No one can seriously take a stand against quality. But being in favour of it requires intensive discussion if quality is not to degenerate into an empty phrase or an idol. This book attempts to examine the concept of quality both from an interdisciplinary subject-specific perspective and against the background of research and teaching.
Eleven authors from fundamentally different disciplines present their view of the concept of quality. It becomes clear that quality is not an end in itself and involves considerably more than the quickly formulated demand for growth and increase. Quality requires a sense of proportion, care and reflection beyond the boundaries of individual disciplines.
