How people behave in critical driving situations is the central research question of this study. The starting point was accident scenarios that had stood out because a large number of those involved in the accidents each reacted in a similar way. This led to the assumption that standard reactions occur in some accident-prone situations: many people appear to behave in comparable ways when confronted with a particular critical situation in road traffic. Since no generally valid statement about reactions in critical driving situations can be made on the basis of accident data alone, a total of two studies were conducted using the Vehicle in the Loop (VIL). By combining a driving simulator with a real vehicle, the VIL enables both a standardised and a highly realistic experience of critical situations. The results of the studies provide starting points for necessary functionalities of driver assistance systems intended to support drivers optimally when another road user fails to give them right of way at an intersection.
