The pursuit of growth has enjoyed high priority in economics for centuries. Despite cyclical fluctuations, companies’ striving for expansion appears to be unbroken. As recently as the 1980s and 1990s, contrary themes such as “downsizing” and rationalisation determined the strategic orientations of companies. In light of ongoing globalisation and the pursuit of economies of scale, corporate growth is once again gaining increasing importance and presence. Already today, current economic debates are no longer dominated by restructuring, staff reductions and cost cutting, since companies do not expect these measures to yield long-term corporate success.
